Guidance for Those Who Wish to Marry on Approved Premises

1. Booking the Registrars

Once the provisional date and time to be married at approved premises have been agreed, the couple should contact the Register Office for the registration district in which the venue is situated, at Maltravers House, Petters Way, Yeovil, Somerset BA20 1SP, to confirm a Superintendent Registrar and Registrar will be available for the ceremony. Without these people there can be no marriage.

2. Giving Notice(s) of Marriage Where the Couple Live

Before a marriage can be performed the Bride and Groom must fulfil certain legal obligations by giving notice of their intention to marry to a Superintendent Registrar. This is called giving Notice of Marriage. Each party to the marriage must give a Notice of Marriage in person in the Register Office for the district in which he or she lives. Even if they both live within the same district, they must each attend the same Office to give separate Notices of Marriage. Whilst Notices of Marriage cannot be given more than twelve calendar months before the date of the wedding, the Register Office will accept provisional bookings beyond that period. A fee of £30.00 is payable for each Notice of Marriage given.

3. Collecting the Authority

When one or both Notices are given in different registration districts from that where the marriage is to take place, it is the responsibility of the couple to ensure that the authority/authorities for marriage are collected from their local Register Office(s) and taken to the Register Office for the district in which they are to marry at least two days prior to the marriage.

4. Arrangements to be made

The couple should be warned that any arrangements made for a marriage to take place on the approved premises will require;
(a) the attendance of the Superintendent Registrar and a Registrar for the district in which the premises are located;
(b) the issue of the authority or authorities for marriage by the Superintendent Registrar(s) to whom Notice of Marriage was given.

5. Non-Religious Ceremony

The couple should be advised that only a civil, non-religious ceremony can be permitted by the Superintendent Registrar. Any music, reading of words or performance which form part of the ceremony must be secular. The content of the ceremony must be agreed in advance with the Superintendent Registrar conducting the ceremony.
